This is where things get weird in the best way. Island Instruments is a one-man shop in Montreal, and the ThunderJazz is a J-style bass with an aluminium neck, aluminium fretboard and aluminium nut on a Sitka spruce body. The result is a bass with real presence and a tight, immediate response, wrapped in a purple finish that does not disappear into the back line.

Fair warning: at 4.52 kg it carries some heft. That is the trade for the aluminium construction and the rock-solid feel that comes with it. Avedissian pickups, Jescar stainless frets, 34 inch scale, hand-built in Quebec and finished in May 2025. If you want a Jazz bass with more character than the usual suspects, this is the one. Ships with an ultra-premium gigbag and all the goodies.

This Island Instruments ThunderJazz comes from a private collection and is in stock at Sarg's Guitars, my curated shop for high-end and collectible basses in Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium, which I run alongside Bass Freaks and Guitar Freaks. An aluminium-neck J-bass from a one-man Montreal shop is about as far from the usual second-hand fare as it gets in Europe.
